Lessons from Mary, Mother of Jesus

Usually when I read the story of Mary and her encounter with angel Gabriel, it is always from the angle of the Angel’s message to Mary. However, today while reflecting on that scripture (Luke 1:26-38), the Holyspirit redirected my focus to Mary’s reaction to the message she received.Mary-and-Gabriel-214x300

The angel had just delivered good news to Mary telling her that she had found favor with God and she would conceive a son named Jesus.  How did Mary react and what lesson can we glean from this?

Verse 34: After the angel had downloaded the message, Mary’s question to him was this: “How will this be, since I am a virgin and have no intimacy with any man?”

For the purpose of this post, the phrase “a virgin” would mean innocence and the phrase “no intimacy” will mean lack of experience. Relating this to you, like Mary, God may have visited you at a point in time and given you a vision of His plans and purposes for your life. However, due the “bigness” of the vision, the next question that pops up is “How will this be, since I am innocent and have no experience relating to this vision?”

For the sake of clarity, let me give an example. God has told you that in the near future you will become the first female president of your country and that you would be the one to spearhead the team that would make her a praise on the earth. Looking at your background, you are just a girl from a local city like Nazareth: a city where nothing good is expected to come out from. No exposure, no experience, no league, no rank. Just an ordinary local girl! Against this background, God has chosen you for this assignment and the big question is, God how will this be?

Let me be your angel Gabriel today. Lol! Just as the angel said to Mary, I say unto you, “dear reader, the Holyspirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you”… For with God nothing (is or ever) shall be impossible”. Yes, you read that right. Just for emphasis, FOR WITH GOD NOTHING IS OR EVER SHALL BE IMPOSSIBLE!

It does not end there people, Mary did something very instructive. She surrendered herself and agreed! She said in verse 38, “I am the servant of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word”.

I was expecting that after the angel had left, the next couple of verses would be on how Mary fell under the anointing and was filled with the spirit as the angel had said. Alas, it was not so. Rather, the next verse describes how Mary hurried to go visit Elizabeth in another city and how Elizabeth reacted on seeing her.

Verse 41 says Elizabeth was filled with the Holyspirit and empowered by Him and she exclaimed loudly in verse 42:  “Blessed (worthy to be praised) are you among women, and blessed is the FRUIT of your womb! And blessed (spiritually fortunate and favored by God) is she who believED (notice the word is in past tense) and confidently trustED (past tense) that there would be a fulfillment of the things that were spoken to her (by the angel) sent from the Lord. Wow, this literarily blew me away! I mean at what point did Mary become pregnant? I believe it is at the point she agreed with the Angel. She did not need to fall under the anointing. At the point she agreed, the seed was activated in her womb. Dear reader, have you agreed with God concerning that which He has revealed to you? First things first, you need to agree with Him. Once you agree, the seed becomes activated inside of you also.

Also, notice that Mary did not get a full-grown child immediately. God put the seed in her and she had the responsibility of nurturing it. The same thing applies to you. You have the responsibility of nurturing that seed. Do not go to sleep! Take the right vitamins that will help the child to form (pray hard), drink lots of water (the word of GOD), prepare for the delivery date (take practical steps to prepare for the arrival of the vision). And like every pregnant woman, there is a set time when you MUST deliver that child. Oh! the birth pangs will be so excruciating! You will travail. You will push. But you must not give up until you birth that vision. It is at that point you get a physical manifestation of that which was revealed to you by the Lord.

If you have not agreed with God concerning that vision He revealed to you, please agree with Him now because the blessing is attached to that. If you have surrendered and agreed, congratulations dear! Let me be your Elizabeth today. I exclaim loudly, “Blessed (worthy to be praised) are you among people, and blessed is that fruit of your vision”. Blessed (spiritually fortunate and favored by God) are you because you believed and confidently trusted that there would be a fulfillment of the things that were spoken to you by the Lord. Shalom!

With love,
